Getting There

By air. Sultan Azlan Shah Airport (IPH) at Ipoh handles a small number of domestic flights (mostly from Kuala Lumpur) and some flights to Singapore. The state's busier air gateways are Penang International Airport (PEN, two hours' drive from Ipoh) and KLIA / KLIA2 (about three hours' drive south).

By train. The electrified ETS train from Kuala Lumpur reaches Ipoh in about two and a half hours, with continuing services to Butterworth (for Penang) and the Thai border. The line is one of the most pleasant in Southeast Asia — modern, fast, with good views of limestone karst. Kuala Kangsar and Taiping are intermediate stops.

By road. The North–South Expressway (E1) runs the length of the state, putting Ipoh two hours from KL and Taiping a further hour north. The East–West Highway (Route 4) is the only road across to Kelantan and Terengganu, with the spectacular crossing through the Royal Belum and Temengor forests.
