Sayong Pottery Village

Riverside village famous for the classic gourd-shaped Malay water jars

The village of Sayong, across the Perak River from Kuala Kangsar, is the country's traditional home of the labu sayong — the gourd-shaped earthenware water vessel that is one of Malaysia's most recognisable folk objects. The jars are still made by hand in the village, using river clay turned on a slow wheel, smoothed with a wooden paddle, and fired in low earth kilns that give the surface its characteristic dark sheen.

Several workshops accept casual visitors, and the Sayong Pottery Demonstration Centre runs short demonstrations for tour groups. A small labu sayong is the easiest and most distinctively Perak souvenir, and a working potter's wheel is one of the few traditional crafts still performed at scale anywhere in the country.
