Sarawak's transport runs on three layers: domestic flights between Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, Miri, and Mulu; the Pan-Borneo Highway and coastal trunk roads connecting the towns; and the river network in the interior, where motorised longboats are still the practical option (and in places the only option). MASwings (a Malaysia Airlines subsidiary) operates the bush flights to Bario and Mulu.
For the major destinations along the coast, long-distance buses are cheap and frequent — Kuching to Sibu is about 8 hours, Sibu to Bintulu another 4. The Sibu-Kapit-Belaga express boat service up the Rejang River remains the iconic Sarawak journey: 6 hours per leg through villages, logging camps, and rainforest scenery. Car rental in Kuching or Miri is straightforward; driving is left-hand and broadly safe.
