The State Opera and Ballet Theater stands just off Sukhbaatar Square, making it an easy cultural stop while you are in the centre of Ulaanbaatar. The building is worth noticing from the square, but the better reason to come is a performance: local opera, ballet, and visiting Russian companies all appear here.
Check the notice board or website for weekend shows, which are often inexpensive by international standards. Even if the production is modest, it gives a good glimpse of the city's formal cultural life.
