Day Trips

The surrounding region has several worthwhile destinations reachable in a day from Bagan. Transport can be arranged through guesthouses or hired directly from drivers at Nyaung-U market.

Mount Popa is the most popular day trip, about 50 km southeast of Bagan. A volcanic plug rises 737 metres from the plain, topped by a monastery reached by a covered staircase of 777 steps. The climb takes around 35 minutes and is steep in places. Monkeys line the stairway and will take food if you give them the chance. The views from the top over the surrounding countryside are excellent. Popa is considered the home of Myanmar's most powerful nat spirits, and the site is an important pilgrimage destination throughout the year.
