A half-day escape in Pyin U Lwin, about 70 km east of Mandalay. These beautifully maintained botanical gardens date from the British colonial era and feel a world away from the plains below. The orchid collection is a highlight, and the Nan Myint Tower offers panoramic views over the gardens and surrounding hills. There is a pleasant teashop on the grounds serving good local coffee.
