Royal Palace

Mandalay's Royal Palace stands inside the large square fortress at the centre of the city. The original palace was moved here from Amarapura by elephant after 1852, looted after the British conquest, and destroyed during World War II; the buildings you see today are 1990s reconstructions.

The reconstruction uses modern materials rather than the original teak, but the palace still helps explain Mandalay's role as Burma's last royal capital. Tourists enter from the east gate, and the long walk in gives a strong sense of the scale of the old royal compound.
