The world's longest teak bridge, stretching 1.2 kilometres across the shallow Taungthaman Lake near Amarapura. Built around 1850 from wood salvaged when the royal capital moved to Mandalay, U Bein Bridge is still in daily use by monks, farmers, and fishermen.
The best time to visit is late afternoon, when the bridge becomes a silhouette against the sunset and the light over the lake is extraordinary. Locals set up tea stalls at either end, and small boats offer rides underneath for a different perspective.
From Mandalay, take bus number 8 from the corner of 84th and 29th Street and ask the driver to stop at the bridge. A motorbike taxi is faster and costs a few thousand kyat.
