Zegyo is Mandalay's main covered market, a sprawling multi-storey commercial maze at the heart of the city near the clock tower. It sells everything from dried fish and chillies to lacquerware, longyi fabric, gold jewellery, and Buddhist paraphernalia. The ground floor is practical shopping for locals; the upper floors are better for browsing crafts.
Zegyo is much less touristic than the craft markets around Mandalay Hill and gives a truer sense of daily commerce. The surrounding streets are lined with specialist shops — bronze casting, tapestry weaving, goldbeating — that reflect Mandalay's status as Myanmar's craft capital.
