Le-myet-hna Temple

Four-sided temple with four Buddhas facing the cardinal directions

Le-myet-hna ("four-faced") is a small square temple just north-west of Shite-thaung, named for the four seated Buddha images facing the cardinal directions inside. It was built in 1430, very early in Mrauk-U's history, by King Min Saw Mon — the founder of the kingdom. The temple is therefore one of the oldest standing structures on the site.

Each Buddha image is unusually fine, with carved hair-curls and elongated earlobes characteristic of early Rakhine Buddhist sculpture. The temple is compact and easy to take in in a few minutes; visit it on the way to or from Htukkanthein.
