Bawbawgyi Pagoda

7th-century cylindrical brick stupa at Sri Ksetra

The Bawbawgyi is the most striking single monument at Sri Ksetra and probably the oldest surviving stupa in Myanmar. A tall tapering cylinder of dark red brick, about 46 metres high with no surface decoration, it stands on a square base in open fields at the southern edge of the archaeological zone.

The form is unlike anything in later Burmese Buddhism — no bell, no spire, no ornament — and is closer to the early stupas of India and Sri Lanka. Most scholars place it in the seventh or eighth century. The setting is part of the appeal: rice paddies, palmyra trees, a few water buffalo, and almost always no other visitors.
