Pyay is a quiet stop on the long road or rail line between Yangon and Bagan, and most of what is worth seeing lies within an easy half-day. The Shwesandaw Pagoda dominates the centre, and the ruins of the ancient Pyu city of Sri Ksetra — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — are eight kilometres east of town and a genuinely off-the-beaten-track day out. Add the riverside Aung Chan Tha pagoda for sunset and a wander through the central market, and that is the city.
