Sehtatgyi Pagoda (Big Buddha)

Giant seated Buddha image on Sehtatgyi hill

On the hill just east of central Pyay, the Sehtatgyi Pagoda houses an enormous seated Buddha image — over twenty metres tall — visible from much of the city. The image is unfinished in the traditional Burmese sense (one of its hands is raised, and locals will explain the reasons), and the platform around it gives an alternative view of Pyay and the river to the one from Shwesandaw.

The walk up from the centre takes about twenty minutes; tuk-tuks will go all the way to the foot of the steps for very little. The terrace is quietest in the late morning, between the dawn and evening prayer rushes.
