The market sprawls over several blocks just back from the river in central Pyay. Mornings are the time to come — the fish from the Ayeyarwady is sold by 9am, and the noodle and mohinga stands around the perimeter are busiest at breakfast.
Pyay is an important inland trade centre and the market reflects that: produce comes in from the Bago hills to the east, dried fish from the river, textiles and longyis from Yangon. It is a working market, not aimed at visitors, and is one of the easiest places in town to see daily life away from the pagodas.
