Chinatown (Latha Township)

Yangon's Chinatown occupies Latha Township, just west of the Sule Pagoda, and has been the centre of the city's substantial Chinese community since the colonial era. Cantonese, Hokkien, and Hakka communities each had their own associations and temples here, and the neighbourhood retains a distinctly Chinese character.

The most atmospheric time to visit is in the evening, when 19th Street fills with street stalls serving Burmese and Chinese food, cold beer, and grilled skewers. The noise and smoke and light make it one of the better street-eating experiences in Yangon. Numerous Chinese temples and clan houses are scattered through the surrounding streets.
