Getting Around

Yangon has no metro. Getting around is by taxi, trishaw, or bus. Taxis are cheap by international standards and the most practical option for visitors — agree a price before getting in, as meters are rarely used. Download a ride-hailing app (Grab operates in Yangon) for more transparent pricing.

Trishaws (bicycle rickshaws) operate in the outer downtown streets and are a slower, more atmospheric option for short distances. City buses are crowded and the routes are difficult to navigate without Burmese. The Circular Railway (the 45-km loop train around the city) is more experience than transport but covers a wide arc of the city's outer suburbs cheaply. Renting a car with a driver is a practical option for day trips to Bago, Thanlyin, or the Taukkyan War Cemetery.
