Bogyoke Market (Scott Market) is the main shopping destination, a large covered market built in 1926 selling longyis, lacquerware, gems, antiques, and clothing. It is the best single place to buy traditional Burmese crafts. Myanmar is a major source of rubies, sapphires, and jade, and gemstone dealers are concentrated around the market. Be cautious about gem purchases unless you know what you are buying.
