The downtown grid between Strand Road and Anawratha Street contains one of Asia's most intact collections of British colonial architecture. Many of the grand early 20th-century buildings are crumbling but still in use. The Strand Hotel on Strand Road dates to 1901 and remains a landmark, while the ornate Secretariat building (where independence leader Aung San was assassinated in 1947) is a short walk away.
