Holy Trinity Cathedral

Red-brick Anglican cathedral from colonial Yangon, built in an Indo-Saracenic Gothic style

Holy Trinity Cathedral stands on Bogyoke Aung San Road, close to the market, and is one of Yangon's clearest pieces of colonial church architecture. Work began in the 1880s and the cathedral was completed in the 1890s, using an Indo-Saracenic Gothic language that suited both British taste and the climate of Burma.

Inside, the interest is in the stained glass, memorial tablets, and the slightly worn dignity of a church that has outlived the empire that built it. It pairs well with a walk through downtown Yangon's surviving colonial streets, especially if you are trying to read the city beyond pagodas and markets.
