Rangoon War Cemetery

Commonwealth war cemetery in central Yangon, with bronze plaques adapted to the tropical climate.

Rangoon War Cemetery is the central Yangon counterpart to the larger Taukkyan cemetery north of the city. It contains Commonwealth burials from the First and Second World Wars, with bronze plaques used instead of the usual Portland headstones because the climate is so hard on stone. The result is a compact, unusually textured memorial landscape in the middle of a busy city.

The cemetery is a sober stop rather than a scenic one, but it adds important context to Yangon's wartime history under Japanese occupation and Allied return. Visit respectfully, keep voices low, and avoid treating it as just another colonial-era photo stop.
