Anhwasa is a Korean Buddhist temple on the slopes of Mt Songak, about 4 km north of central Kaesong. The temple was founded in 930 and rebuilt in the late 14th century after war damage. It is small and modest by the standards of Korean monasteries — a main worship hall, a few subsidiary buildings, an old pagoda — but the setting on a wooded mountainside makes the visit worthwhile.
Anhwasa is rarely included on standard tours; when it is, it tends to be combined with a hike on Mt Songak, which is the chief reason to come up here. The mountain itself was sacred to the Koryo dynasty and the slopes still feel atmospheric.
