Kaesong Folk Hotel

The Kaesong Folk Hotel is a complex of traditional Korean courtyard houses converted into tourist accommodation in 1989. There are around 50 rooms spread across nineteen restored hanok buildings, with paper-screen sliding doors, heated ondol floors, and shared courtyards.

For most foreign visitors who get to spend the night here — as part of overnight tours from Pyongyang — it is the only chance on the trip to sleep in a non-Soviet-era building. The standards are basic and the heating in winter can be erratic, but the place itself is the experience. The hotel's restaurant serves the traditional pansangki, an elaborate multi-bowl table-set of Kaesong specialities, which is itself a reason to overnight here.
