Sungyang Hall is a Confucian academy founded in the 14th century, on the lower slopes of Mt Janam in the eastern part of Kaesong. The compound is small but well preserved: a walled courtyard, a main lecture hall with painted beams, and a few attached buildings used for student dormitories and the housing of ritual tablets.
The academy was associated with Chong Mong-ju — the same loyalist scholar killed on the Sonjuk Bridge in 1392 — and it later honoured him as one of its principal sages. It is much less visited than the larger Koryo Museum complex (the former Sungkyunkwan academy), but its smaller scale gives a better feel for what these private academies were like in everyday use.
