Moranbong Park

Moranbong Park on the wooded hilltop above the Taedong River bend is the most popular public green space in Pyongyang, and one of the few places where foreign visitors can observe Pyongyang residents in unscripted everyday life. On weekends and public holidays, families picnic on the hillside, groups play music, couples stroll, and children run between the trees. The atmosphere, in these moments, is not so different from a park in any East Asian city.

The park contains several historic pavilions, an open-air amphitheatre used for musical and political events, and views over the river toward the Juche Tower and Kim Il-sung Square. The Moranbong Band — Kim Jong-un's favoured pop ensemble — took its name from the park. It is one of the more genuinely pleasant places in the city and a natural contrast to the monumental scale of the official sites nearby.

A story
Moranbong contains the ruins of Ulmil Pavilion, one of the oldest surviving structures in Pyongyang, built during the Goryeo dynasty and rebuilt several times since. It is one of the few places in the city where pre-Japanese-colonial and pre-war Korean architectural heritage survives, the rest of the old city having been destroyed almost completely during the 1950-53 war.
