Al-Khandaq Fort

Al-Khandaq is the main historical sight in Buraimi itself — a traditional Omani mud-brick fort with corner towers, a small enclosed courtyard, and walls about ten metres high. Restored in the early 2000s, it now houses a small museum on local history and is one of the few standing pre-modern structures in the town.

The fort sits a few hundred metres from the main square. Entry is free or very cheap. The interior is small; allow 30 minutes. The view from the upper rampart over the date palms and the modern town below is the best reason to climb up.

A story
The fort takes its name from the moat — *al-khandaq* in Arabic — that once surrounded it. It was built by the Bani Naim tribe in the early 19th century and was the local defensive centre during the long Buraimi Oasis dispute between Oman, Abu Dhabi, and Saudi Arabia, which only finally resolved in 1974.
