Jebel Hafeet

Jebel Hafeet is the limestone mass that rises 1,249 metres almost directly from the desert on the southern edge of Al Ain, visible from central Buraimi on any clear day. The mountain is split between the UAE and Oman, with the summit just on the Emirati side. The road to the top — described above — is reason enough for the trip.

From the summit, the view extends across the date plantations of Al Ain, the salt flats of Sabkhat Matti, and on a very clear morning to the Hajar Mountains. There is a hotel, viewpoint, and cafe at the top; bring warm clothes in winter, when the upper slopes can be near freezing at night. The drive up takes about 30 minutes from central Al Ain and 45 from Buraimi.

A story
The road up Jebel Hafeet has been called one of the great driving roads in the world: a 12-kilometre ribbon with 60 corners, climbing from sea level to 1,200 metres in 30 minutes. It cost over US$60 million to build in the 1980s and remains one of the longest single-mountain ascents in the Arabian Peninsula.
