Sohar is spread out and not easy to navigate without a vehicle. Taxis are available — negotiate the fare before getting in; there are no meters. Car hire from Muscat is the most practical option if you're making Sohar a planned stop. Local buses run to Muscat and other Batinah coast towns but are slow. The fort, the old souk, and the harbour are all within walking distance of each other in the old centre.
