Qalhat was once a major Indian Ocean port on the trade route between East Africa, Arabia, and Asia. The ruined city is now a UNESCO-listed archaeological site, with the remains of Bibi Maryam's mausoleum and traces of the settlement that impressed Ibn Battuta in the 14th century.
