Multani food is heavy, sweet and very spicy. The local specialities are the famous sohan halwa — a dense, sticky semolina-and-ghee fudge studded with nuts and edible silver, sold by the kilo in tins — and Multani sweets generally: gajar halwa, gulab jamun, kheer. For savoury food, the city is best known for chicken karahi cooked in great open pans over coal fires, for paya (slow-cooked trotters served at breakfast), and for the fish karahi along the Chenab south of town. Cheap, plentiful chaat and gol gappay carts work the bazaars from late afternoon.
The Cantonment area has a row of more polished restaurants along Bosan Road and Abdali Road, mostly serving Punjabi standards plus the inevitable Chinese-Pakistani fusion. The walled city is where the interesting eating happens — especially around Chowk Bazaar and the Hussain Agahi food street, which gets going after sunset and stays loud well past midnight.
