Herodium

Herodium is King Herod's fortress-palace on a man-made hill southeast of Bethlehem. The site combines archaeology, political theatre, and landscape: Herod reshaped the hill itself, built a fortified palace on top, and was later buried here.

The ruins are worth the short trip from Bethlehem for the scale of the earthworks and the views across the Judaean Desert. Give yourself time to climb, look back toward Bethlehem, and take in how deliberately dramatic the setting is.
