The Monastery of St. George, also known locally as Mar Jeriess, is a Christian shrine in Al-Khader, just outside Bethlehem. It is tied to Orthodox devotion to St. George and is also respected in local Muslim tradition through its association with Al Khider.
The monastery has a long reputation as a place of healing, especially for mental illness, and was even used in the 19th century as a psychiatric facility. Visit in mid-April or early May, according to the Julian calendar, and the surrounding town marks St. George's feast with a festival shared by Muslim and Christian residents.
