Mines View Park

Lookout over the abandoned Benguet gold mines

The eastern edge of Baguio drops away dramatically into the deep valleys of Itogon, where copper and gold were mined intensively from the 1900s through the 1980s. Mines View Park is the official lookout over the now-mostly-closed mines, with binoculars set into a railing along the edge of a cliff.

The park itself is a small affair — a lookout deck, a few statues, a wishing well — but the surrounding strip is one of the city's most committed tourist markets, with stalls selling silver jewellery, Cordilleran weavings, brass cookware, strawberry jam, and (the local specialty) photographs taken of you in traditional Igorot dress wearing a feather headdress and holding a wooden spear, with St. Bernard dogs trained to pose alongside.

It is tourist-trap territory, but the view is real — at sunset the abandoned mining roads cut across the valley like long bronze scars.
