Legazpi City

Albay provincial capital at the foot of Mayon Volcano, gateway to Bicol volcanic landscapes

Legazpi City sits at the foot of Mayon Volcano, one of the most perfectly shaped volcanic cones on earth. The view dominates everything here — from the waterfront boulevard to the market streets to the rice paddies at the edge of town. It is the capital of Albay province and the largest city in the Bicol Region, serving as both the political hub and the natural gateway to the area's volcanic landscapes.

The city itself is a working provincial capital rather than a tourist showpiece, but that is part of the appeal. The old quarter around Albay Cathedral has genuine character, and the waterfront along the Legazpi Boulevard offers sweeping views of the Albay Gulf. The local food scene leans heavily on Bicolano cuisine, known across the Philippines for its liberal use of coconut milk and chili — pili nuts, laing, and Bicol Express are the dishes to seek out.

Most visitors use Legazpi as a base for exploring Mayon and the surrounding countryside. The Cagsawa Ruins, partially buried by an 1814 eruption, are the classic photo spot. Whale shark interaction tours operate from nearby Donsol, and the Hoyop-Hoyopan and Calabidongan caves offer underground adventures within easy reach of the city.
