Balite Falls

Balite Falls is a tiered waterfall set in the forested hills of Alfonso municipality in the southern interior of Cavite province. The falls themselves are modest by Philippine standards — a drop of perhaps eight to ten metres into a pool — but the setting is pleasant and the cooler highland air makes the hike in agreeable compared to the coastal lowlands.

The trail to the falls passes through small farms and bamboo groves, taking about thirty minutes on foot from the main road. The pool at the base is safe for swimming. Combined with a coffee tour in Alfonso and the views from the ridge above the town, the area makes for a half-day excursion from Tagaytay.

Alfonso is also worth visiting for its colonial church, the Saint John the Baptist Parish Church, which dates to the Spanish period and has survived remarkably intact. The municipality is increasingly known for its organic farms and has developed a modest agri-tourism circuit that includes strawberry picking, herb gardens, and farm-to-table restaurants.

A story
Balite Falls sits in the mountains above Alfonso, one of several cool hill towns in the interior of Cavite that fill with Metro Manila escapees on weekends. The surrounding area produces some of the Philippines' better highland coffee — Alfonso's strawberry farms and organic coffee plots have made it a small agri- tourism destination in its own right.
