Binakayan Battle Site

Binakayan in Kawit municipality is where Filipino revolutionary forces won one of their most important early victories against the Spanish in 1896. The site is close to the Aguinaldo Shrine, and visiting both together gives a coherent picture of the revolution's opening phase in Cavite, which became its stronghold and primary base of operations.

A marker and small memorial at the Binakayan-Dalahican area commemorates the battle. The area is not a major tourist site in the conventional sense — there is no museum or developed heritage infrastructure — but for those interested in the Philippine revolution, standing at the site carries weight. The geography of the coastline and estuary that the defenders used to their advantage can still be read in the landscape.

Kawit municipality itself is worth walking for its old church and the street layout around the plaza. The Aguinaldo family's influence on the town is visible in the architecture and in the way locals talk about the revolutionary period as personal history rather than abstract heritage.

A story
The Battle of Binakayan in November 1896 was the first major Filipino military victory of the revolution against Spain. Caviteño forces under Magdiwang and Magdalo factions of the Katipunan held off a superior Spanish force and caused heavy casualties — a significant blow to Spanish morale at the outset of the revolution. Emilio Aguinaldo's rising prominence dates from this engagement.
