Island municipality off northern Cebu, known for Santa Fe's white-sand beaches and slower island pace
Bantayan is an island municipality off the northern tip of Cebu, reached by a ferry crossing from Hagnaya Wharf. It is far quieter than the resort strip around Cebu City, and its beaches — particularly the long white-sand stretch at Santa Fe's Kota Beach — are among the finest in the Visayas. The water is shallow and calm, the crowds are manageable outside Holy Week, and the pace is resolutely unhurried.
Santa Fe is where the ferry docks and where most visitors stay, with a strip of small resorts and guesthouses backing the beach. The main town of Bantayan, about 12 km inland, is the island's commercial centre — the old colonial church dating from the 16th century is the most significant sight on the island. Virgin Island, a small uninhabited sandbar a short boat trip from Santa Fe, is the top island-hopping destination.
Getting there involves a bus from Cebu City's North Bus Terminal to Hagnaya Wharf (roughly three hours), followed by a 45-minute ferry crossing to Santa Fe. Bangkas (outrigger boats) run between the island and the mainland; schedules and frequency vary by season.

Getting Around
Bantayan Island is flat and compact, making it easy to get around. The main options are tricycle (the ubiquitous Philippine motorbike-and-sidecar combination), habal-habal (motorbike taxi), or renting your own motorbike or bicycle.
Renting a motorbike is the most practical option for exploring beyond Santa Fe — several places in the beach area rent them by the day for modest prices. The roads are in reasonable condition and traffic is light. The island is small enough that the 12 km between Santa Fe and the town of Bantayan takes about 20 minutes, and you can circuit the entire island in a few hours.
Bangka (outrigger boat) is the transport for the offshore islets. Boat rentals are arranged directly from the beach at Santa Fe and rates are typically negotiated per trip.

Getting There
Getting to Bantayan requires a combination of bus and ferry. From Cebu City's North Bus Terminal (not the South terminal), take a bus north towards Hagnaya Wharf — services run regularly and the journey takes two and a half to three hours depending on traffic. From Hagnaya, ferries (both fast craft and slow boat) run to Santa Fe on Bantayan Island; the fast boat takes about 30 minutes and the slow boat around 45 minutes. Ferries run roughly every hour during daylight, with the last departures in the late afternoon.
The total journey from Cebu City takes three and a half to four and a half hours depending on connections. There is no airport on the island. During Holy Week (the week before Easter), the island fills with Filipino vacationers and ferries can be extremely crowded; book early or avoid this period entirely if crowds are not your thing.
