Carcar

Old Cebuano town known for Spanish-era houses, a grand church, and roadside lechon.

Carcar is an old colonial town on Cebu's south coast, about 40 km from Cebu City. It is not a resort and does not try to be one. The draw is the cluster of Spanish-era houses, the big parish church, the town plaza, and the local food stalls that made Carcar a Cebuano stop in its own right.

The heritage core is small enough to walk. Start around Saint Catherine of Alexandria Church, then look for restored houses such as Balay na Tisa and Mercado Mansion. The city museum helps pull the pieces together.

Carcar is also known across Cebu for lechon and chicharon. That matters here: the town is best visited as a short heritage-and-food stop on the road south, not as a polished destination.

Eating Out

Carcar is famous in Cebu for lechon and chicharon. Most visitors eat casually around the market or along the main road, where stalls sell roast pork by the kilo and crisp pork rind in bags for the ride south.
