Donsol

Sorsogon fishing town known for wild whale-shark encounters and firefly river cruises.

Donsol is a small coastal town in Sorsogon that earned a place on the travel map for one reason: wild whale sharks, or butanding, feeding seasonally in the bay. Unlike the more controversial feeding-based encounters elsewhere in the Philippines, Donsol's model is built around searching for animals that arrive naturally, with trained local guides and rules against touching or feeding.

That ethical difference matters. Sightings are never guaranteed, and that is part of the bargain if you want a wildlife encounter rather than a show. In season, the Donsol Whale Shark Interaction Center is the organising point for boats from Dancalan.

Donsol also has a quieter second act after dark: Ogod River Firefly Cruise, where small boats drift under mangroves and riverside trees flickering with fireflies. The town itself is plain and rural, but the combination of whale sharks, river nights and Bicol countryside makes it worth the detour from Legazpi.

Getting There

Most travellers reach Donsol through Legazpi, the main transport hub for this part of Bicol. Vans and buses connect Legazpi with Donsol, usually taking around 90 minutes depending on road and weather conditions.

The whale-shark boats leave from Dancalan, a short tricycle ride west of Donsol town centre. Stay near Dancalan if the boat trip is your main reason for coming, but carry enough cash: card use and ATMs are limited.

Things to Do

Donsol is about wildlife, not town sightseeing. Plan around the whale-shark season, leave room for a failed sighting day, and add the river firefly cruise in the evening. Divers can also ask local operators about Manta Bowl trips in Ticao Pass when sea conditions are right.

When to Go

Whale-shark season in Donsol generally runs from November to May or June, with the best odds usually from February to April. Even then, this is wild animal watching, so build in more than one morning if the encounter is important to you.

Bicol is exposed to heavy rain and typhoons, especially from June to November. Outside whale-shark season, Donsol is much quieter and the firefly cruises still have appeal, but most travellers will not make the detour for that alone.
