Tamaraw Falls is the most visited natural attraction inland from Puerto Galera. A 30-metre cascade drops through dense tropical vegetation about 15 kilometres southeast of town, off the main road toward Calapan. The surrounding area is cool and humid — a welcome contrast to the coastal heat — and the pool at the base of the falls is good for swimming.
The falls are named after the tamaraw, a small endemic buffalo found only on Mindoro, now critically endangered. You are unlikely to see one at the falls, but the creature is a symbol of the island and appears on the Philippine twenty-peso bill. Jeepneys and tricycles from Puerto Galera town pass the falls on the Calapan road; it is a straightforward half-day trip.
