Verde Island Passage Diving

One of the most species-rich marine corridors on earth, right off the beach

The Verde Island Passage, the channel separating Mindoro from the Batangas coast to the north, has been called the centre of the centre of marine biodiversity. The dive sites accessible from Puerto Galera sit in or near this passage, and the underwater life reflects it: hard and soft coral formations in excellent condition, more than 180 species of nudibranchs, sea turtles, humphead wrasse, giant clams, and regular sightings of pelagic fish.

The dive sites range from gentle shallow reefs suitable for beginners to strong-current walls and technical sites for advanced divers. The most famous — Sabang Point, The Canyons, Sinandigan Wall — are all within a short boat ride of Sabang Beach. Dive shops line the beach and equipment rental is standard; PADI courses are widely available for those starting out.

A story
Marine biologists from the California Academy of Sciences identified the Verde Island Passage as the 'centre of the centre of marine biodiversity' — a region of the Coral Triangle that contains more marine fish species per unit area than anywhere else on the planet. The term was coined from a 2005 survey that found more species in a single dive here than in entire regions of the Caribbean.
