The beachfront along Barrio Barretto is lined with a string of small bars that blur into one another after dark. Most share the same formula: plastic chairs in the sand, a cooler of beer, a sound system playing a mix of OPM (Original Pilipino Music) and 1990s American rock. A few have their own small swimming areas. None of them take themselves too seriously. The strip is busiest from Friday evening through Sunday. During the day the same spots serve as lazy coffee-and-breakfast spots; the coffee is instant and excellent if you want something unpretentious.
