The area around Subic Bay makes for an easy base for excursions across the region. Olongapo City directly adjoins the freeport and is the nearest urban centre, worth a wander for its markets and street food. Clark and Angeles City to the east offer another former US base turned entertainment and economic zone, about an hour away via the expressway. Corregidor Island in Manila Bay — the fortified island where Filipino and American forces made their last stand against the Japanese in 1942 — is accessible by ferry from Manila and makes a historically charged full-day excursion.
