Subic Rainforest Reserve

Old-growth tropical forest with monkeys, birds, and Aeta guides

Address Subic Bay Freeport Zone

The jungle surrounding the former naval base is among the most intact lowland tropical forest left in Luzon. The US military inadvertently protected it for decades by keeping developers out, and it now forms a 14,000-hectare watershed reserve. Troops of long-tailed macaques are visible along the roadsides, and the forest supports hornbills, kingfishers, and Philippine eagles. The Aeta (Agta) people — the original forest inhabitants displaced when the base was built — have returned and run guided walks through the reserve, demonstrating traditional hunting, fire-starting, and plant medicine. Their knowledge of the forest is extraordinary. Arrange tours through the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority or directly at the Aeta Village near the main gate.
