The bones of Naval Station Subic Bay are still visible across the freeport zone. Quonset huts, officers' clubs, chapel buildings, and the distinctive American-style grid of the base housing area survive in various states of use and disuse. The old Cubi Point Naval Air Station — built by levelling a mountain using Philippine and American labour in the 1950s — is now Subic Bay International Airport. The former Officers' Club overlooks the bay from a hill and is one of the best vantage points in the zone. Driving or cycling through the base district takes about two hours; a self-guided map is available at the SBMA main gate.
story: "Building Cubi Point airfield required removing an entire hillside and depositing the fill into the bay — a construction project that took four years and was described at the time as one of the largest earth-moving operations in history. The mountain that once stood there simply no longer exists."
