Leyte Provincial Capitol

1907 neoclassical seat of the Leyte provincial government

The Leyte Provincial Capitol is a neoclassical 1907 government building at the north end of downtown Tacloban — a long colonnaded facade in cream and white that survived both the Second World War and Typhoon Haiyan with relatively limited damage. It served as the seat of Leyte's provincial government until 2019, when the offices moved out to a new complex in Palo, but the original building has been retained for ceremonial use and is the site of frequent civic events.

The grounds are landscaped with palms, a small monument to the Filipino guerrilla forces of WWII, and benches popular with university students from nearby campuses. You can wander the exterior freely. The building is most photogenic in late afternoon when the western sun lights up the long facade.
