Santo Niño Church

Spanish-era parish church and shrine of Tacloban's patron

The Archdiocesan Shrine of Santo Niño, locally just "Sto. Niño Church", stands at the heart of downtown Tacloban — a cream-coloured baroque-revival church with a single bell tower whose origins go back to the Spanish era. The image of the Holy Child enshrined inside is the focus of the city's Sangyaw festival every June, when streets fill with dancers, drum corps and costumed parades.

The interior is calm even on busy days: pale walls, dark hardwood pews, a soft glow on the gilded altar. The church suffered heavy damage during Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 — the storm surge swept through the nave — and was extensively restored in the years following. Mass is held in Waray, English and Tagalog.
