Cargo ship beached by Typhoon Haiyan, preserved as a memorial

The Yolanda Shipwreck Memorial Park in Barangay Anibong, on Tacloban's bay side, marks the spot where the cargo ship MV Eva Jocelyn was driven aground by Typhoon Haiyan's storm surge on 8 November 2013. The ship landed on top of a coastal neighbourhood, killing several residents and crushing dozens of homes. The bow and a section of the hull have been preserved on site, ringed by a memorial garden and Stations of the Cross.

It is a sober, unsensational place. A small chapel and bell tower stand beside the wreck; locals come to light candles, especially around the November anniversary. The walk down from the main road takes only a few minutes and the site is freely accessible; it pairs naturally with a visit to the rebuilt waterfront on the way back into town.

A story
When Typhoon Haiyan's storm surge crashed into Anibong in November 2013 it picked up the cargo ship MV Eva Jocelyn from the bay and dropped it in the middle of a residential neighbourhood — about a mile inland — crushing dozens of houses on impact. Most of the wreck has since been removed, but a forward section has been kept on site, painted blue and rust, as a memorial to the people who died beneath it.
