Waqra

Small coastal settlement south of Doha, with a little-visited nineteenth-century shoreline fort.

Waqra (also spelled Wukair) is a small coastal settlement south of Doha, between the capital and Al Wakrah. It has a little-visited fort — Al Waqra Fort — that sits quietly on the shoreline, built in the 19th century and used as a pearl trading post. The fort is in reasonable condition and worth a stop if you are making the drive south.

There is not much else here, but the quiet waterfront and the absence of crowds are the point. The drive along the coast road from Doha to Al Wakrah passes through Waqra and takes less than half an hour.

Getting There

Waqra is 20km south of central Doha on the coastal road (Al Wakrah Road / Route 44). By car from Doha it's about 25 minutes in normal traffic. There is no public transport serving Waqra directly.

The village sits between Doha and Al Wakrah, making it easy to combine with a visit to either. From Hamad International Airport the drive is about 15 minutes south. Taxis and ride-hailing apps (Karwa, Uber) serve the route from Doha.

Things to Do

Waqra is not a destination in its own right but a quiet stop on the coastal road between Doha and Al Wakrah. The fort and the waterfront are the reasons to pull over.

The pace here is entirely different from Doha — the village is small, unhurried, and largely untouched by tourism. An hour or two is enough to see the fort and walk the waterfront; combine it with Al Wakrah to the south for a fuller half-day on the coast.
