Bars and Cafes

Andong is not known for its nightlife, but the city has a pleasant cafe culture centred around the university districts and the streets near the central market. Traditional makgeolli (rice wine) bars serve the cloudy brew in large bowls alongside plates of jeon (savoury pancakes) — a combination that local scholars apparently favoured for centuries and that visitors adopt enthusiastically.

The traditional makgeolli-and-jeon pairing is the evening social ritual here. Look for small restaurants along the market streets that have blackboards advertising makgeolli and are full of locals — they're easy to identify and invariably welcoming. Andong soju is worth trying at least once, ideally paired with a bowl of jjimdak.
