Jeonju has a strong cafe culture, partly because the Hanok Village generates high foot traffic and partly because the city has a sizeable university population from Jeonbuk National University. The village streets are lined with traditional tea houses serving omija (five-flavour berry) tea, ssangwha tea, and cinnamon punch alongside modern espresso bars. In the evenings, the bars in the area around the main bus terminal are where locals drink.
Makgeolli (fermented rice wine) is the regional drink of choice — Jeonju's version is thicker and more complex than the standard commercial varieties. Many bars and restaurants serve it from earthenware pots with a ladle, in the traditional way, accompanied by jeon (Korean savoury pancakes).
